Michael Jeffrey Jordan (born February 17, 1963) is a former American pro basketball player and active businessman. His biography on the National Basketball Association (NBA) website says, “By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time.” Michael Jordan was one of the most efficaciously marketed athletes of his era and was instrumental in popularizing the American around the world from 1990 to 2000.
After a standout career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, at which he led the Tarheels to a National Championship Title in 1982, Jordan joined the National Basketball Association’s Chicago Bulls in 1984. He quickly came forth as a league star, thrilling crowds with his productive scoring. His dunking talent, illustrated by executing slam dunks from the free throw line in slam dunk battles, earned him the nicknames “Air Jordan” and “His Airness”. He also gained a reputation for being one of the greatest defensive players in basketball. In 1991, he landed his first NBA championship ttile with the Bulls, and followed that achievement with championships in 1992 and 1993, securing a “three-peat”. Although Mike abruptly retired from basketball at the beginning of the 1993–94 National Basketball Association season to pursue a career in baseball, he rejoined the Bulls in 1995 and led them to three additional championships (1996, 1997, and 1998) as well as an NBA-record 72 regular-season wins in the 1995-96 National Basketball Association season. MJ retired for a second time in 1999, but returned for two more National Basketball Association seasons in 2001 as a member of the Washington Wizards.
